Tea of the Month

Organic Yunnan: Some of us are getting addicted to this rich black tea with slightly sweet and smokey tones.  It goes great with milk and sugar and is a perfect tea for a winter afternoon.

The Art of Tea: Tales from Tea Drinkers

Tea can be overwhelming – the seemingly posh custom and the extraordinary variety can put off the timid tea drinkers among us. But for Amanda Adello, who just visited Modern Tea for the first time, it is finally tea time!

Q: Had you tried loose leaf teas before you visited Modern Tea in Hayes Valley:

A: I’ve been to some of the other tea joints in San Francisco but I never felt comfortable enough to ask questions about what I was drinking.

Q: What was different about your visit to Modern Tea?

A: Well, first of all, the place is warm and inviting. The menu is expansive but really informative and casual. The first time I visited, I wanted a tea with flowery or honey tones and none, or not much caffeine. In most places those would have been two ridiculous requests, but at Modern Tea I found just what I wanted. I had the Special Linden herbal tea and it was delicious!

Q: Will you come back to try some new and different teas?

A: I already have. I went in for Brunch and I had the most amazing cave-aged Chinese black tea, called pu-erh! It was delicious and so was the teacake!
