Happenings

Now Open Weekday Mornings

The days might be back to foggy grey but it is always sunny here at Modern Tea.  Now you can partake in our made-from-scratch organic selection of pastries, oatmeal, granola & tea beginning at 9am Tuesdays through Fridays. We might even have a little of last night’s galette that we could warm for you.  Please come down and enjoy your mornings with us!

Some of our hours may have changed since you last visited our website.  Here’s a link to update you on when we are open.

Spring Teas – Where Are They?

Soon, very soon, our spring green teas should arrive. Lu Shan Clouds & Mist will be the first with Dragonwell and Snow Sprout following shortly.  Many spring teas are delayed because our contacts are spending more time combing the gardens and markets for the best ones.  We are told that it will be a challenging spring tea year (again, too much rain) but there should be some impressive options for you to enjoy in the weeks ahead.  We will let you know as soon as they are here.  We would love to do an event around our spring tea selection and show you how to enjoy them in our affordable, porcelain gaiwans.

New Pu-erh Menu

Two things happened, first, our favorite muddy rich Pu-erh, the Seven Sons Beencha, finally dwindled to just a few cakes and second, in looking for options we found three wonderful teas that can take your Pu-erh sipping in a variety of directions.  We all agree, when you first taste a Pu-erh, it is a bit of a shock, much like your first sip of wine (um, but with flavor profiles more along the lines of peat moss or Aunt Sadie’s wool sweater). Over time and sampling, you can begin to notice the nuances that open up the expansive rich tones that have made us Pu-erh lovers – they run deep.  These three additional Pu-erhs each have their own pedigree and present a different series of flavor profiles for you to enjoy -a perfect stepping stone before investing in 35-50 year old Pu-erhs.  Please come in and ask to see our Pu-erh menu.  And if you haven’t tried the Seven Sons Beencha, we still have some left for you to enjoy at Modern Tea while our supply lasts.

Gearing Up For Other Events

A different kind of event that we are really excited about is coming up in the month of July.  We are hosting an art show and benefit at John’s Hayes Valley Market (580 Hayes) featuring artists that work at Modern Tea or have been involved with us in some way.  More to follow on this, so please stay tuned!

And thank you so much for all of your support!

Tea of the Month

Aged Iron Goddess: A well roasted true Ti Kuan Yin that still carries classic floral tones, but with an added richness from its careful aging. This mellow 8 year old satisfies through multiple steepings in a way a new Ti Kuan Yin can't.
